I'm reading the new Dan Brown book, The Lost Symbol, and I have been reading aloud as I go along.
Reading aloud helps me to hear the words I'm reading. I can get a good feel for what they sound like, so that if I hear them again in conversation, I'll be able to match those words with what I heard before from my own mouth.
It also helps me practice my speech. Since I can hear all speech sounds, including the softest one of all, the voiceless "th" sound, I can self-correct my own speech as I read along.
