A deaf person's perspective on sound and hearing: Nabeel was born with a hearing loss near Washington, DC. He grew up there, and relocated to Houston in 2008. At age 30, he got a cochlear implant and writes about what it is like to hear.

Second Cochlear Implant?

I've been thinking more and more about getting a second implant in my other ear. After getting adjusted to my CI, the hearing aid in the other ear just isn't working out, except perhaps for listening to music. Other than that, it's been screwing up my ability to understand speech and doesn't help with localizing sounds. I guess I love my CI so much that I'm thinking about another one!

Even so, my audiologist wants me to continue wearing the hearing aid to keep the auditory nerve simulated. And my only hesitation about getting a second implant is that it's so soon after my first implant surgery. Let's be honest, I don't like having too many surgeries in a short period of time and I don't know anyone who does.

Here's why I'm thinking about a second implant, based on other people's experiences:

* Improved speech comprehension in noise with less effort
* Sound localization
* Things sounding "better" with two CI than just one (not sure what that means)

Haven't made an official decision yet, but am leaning towards it. I'll have to talk to the audiologist about this.
